Guide

PM resumes fail ATS for a specific reason — the language is too vague

Product management resumes are full of impact statements, but ATS systems are scanning for specific terminology: OKRs, roadmap ownership, B2B SaaS, GTM, stakeholder alignment. If you're describing the right experience with the wrong words, you're getting filtered before anyone reads it.

PM keyword gaps that cost you interviews

  • OKRs: JD says "drive OKR alignment" — your resume says "set quarterly goals". If you've worked with OKRs, use that term explicitly.
  • Roadmap language: "roadmap ownership" and "prioritization frameworks" are scanned — not just "led product planning"
  • Market specificity: B2B SaaS, PLG (product-led growth), enterprise, SMB — these are scanned and matter enormously for role fit signals
  • Stakeholder language: "stakeholder management", "executive alignment", "cross-functional collaboration" — recruiters and ATS both look for these phrases
  • Metrics framing: "DAU", "NPS", "churn", "activation rate", "conversion rate" — not just "improved user engagement"

Real gap example: senior PM at a B2B SaaS company

Job description says: "Own the product roadmap for our enterprise onboarding experience, align stakeholders across sales and engineering, and drive OKR definition for the activation funnel."

Your resume says: "Led cross-team initiatives to improve user onboarding, collaborating with sales and engineering to meet quarterly targets."

You did the same work. But "OKRs", "roadmap ownership", "stakeholder alignment", "enterprise", and "activation" aren't in your resume. Each missing term hurts your score.

How to close PM keyword gaps

  • Use "OKRs" explicitly if you've worked with them — don't substitute "goals" or "objectives"
  • Name your market context: B2B, B2C, enterprise, SMB, PLG — hiring teams screen heavily on this
  • Replace vague phrases: "improved team alignment" → "stakeholder alignment across engineering, design, and sales"
  • Add specific metrics with PM vocabulary: "reduced churn by 12%", "improved 30-day activation by 18%"
  • Run Touchdwn before every application — PM job descriptions vary wildly in terminology between companies
